Make a Difference in a Child’s Life. Mentors and tutors serve as the foundation on which the Nehemiah Center impacts the futures of at-risk children and their families. Whether you enjoy utilizing your talents in the subjects of Reading, Math, Arts & Crafts, Sports, Science, Foreign Language, or just have a compassionate heart for children, our students value your help.

Volunteer Training

The next Volunteer Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11th, 2020 from exactly 5:30-6:30 PM. Space is limited, and this orientation will occur via zoom. If you plan on attending this orientation, please email Sam Marshall at smarshall@nehemiahcenterhouston.org

Pre-Kindergarten (3 and 4 year olds)

Our three and four year old students focus on early learning concepts before entering Kindergarten. There are many ways you can help, including: reading with the students, helping with craft projects and assisting with their language skills. Volunteer shifts are from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Other fun and helpful activities include:

  1. Reading and helping an individual student with English.
  2. Working on beginning letter sounds and reading sight words.
  3. Working on puzzles, “moon sand”, play house, books and letters.
  4. Helping the Pre-K Teacher with daily activities.

There are opportunities available with flexible hours to help the teachers with preparing materials for class.

Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School, High School

Volunteers have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a student, establishing a unique and rewarding mentoring relationship in either the AEP (After School Enrichment Program) which serves children in grades K-5 or the CPP (College Prep Program) which serves students in grades 6-12.
