Did you know May is Mental Health Awareness month? Join us for lunch and a discussion on the book Blessed Are the Crazy: Breaking the Silence about Mental Illness, Family, and Church. The raw and honest memoir of Sarah Griffith Lund looks back at her father’s battle with bipolar disorder, her brother’s mental illness, and her process of seeking answers in her faith communities about the impact of her familial mental illnesses. As she wrestles with spiritual complexities from the pain she felt in God’s presence, to seeing the Holy Spirit on Death Row as she witnesses her mentally ill cousin’s execution, to whom she served as a spiritual advisor, she shares the hope and healing that can come from telling one’s personal story of walking, as Jesus did, with those who bear the blessings and marks of mental illness.
Blessed Are the Crazy can be read as more than a memoir, but also as a resource for churches and other faith-based groups to provide healing and comfort, serving as safe havens for people who have brain diseases and their loved ones.
Books are available by contacting caring@fpchouston.org or they will be available
in Palm Court on the following Sundays, May 8, May 15, and May 22.
